Version 1.3
- Normally, you can start up a Mac while holding down Command-R to boot into what Apple now calls macOS Recovery. That allows you to run Disk Utility, reinstall or wipe and install the system.
- The Mac startup chime that we’ve come to know and love today is an enhanced version of the startup tone that first appeared in the iMac G3 model released in 1998. That one was produced by pitch-shifting the startup sound of the Macintosh Quadra 840AV model. The startup chime was even featured in the 2008 Pixar film WALL-E.

Information:
I had always wanted a collection of the Apple Start-Up Sounds. I have neverseen one on the Net, so I gave up and digitized my own. Some of the sounds Idid not digitize, so I give thanks to the other Macintosh users on the Net. Ido not know the naming convention Apple uses for the different sounds, so Ihope the names I have used are acceptable. All recent Macintosh computershave stored the Start-Up sounds, and some the Crash sounds, in the ROMs. Thismeans I could use programs to extract the sounds directly from the ROMs,saving as much quality as possible. I am currently not distinguishing betweenthe *slightly* different Quadra style Crashes.

Some Apple computers may have sounds which are not in this collection. Ifthis is the case, I would appreciate being contacted about them. If someonecan send me any missing sounds by E-Mail, I would appreciate it.
The Start-Ups are the normal sounds that occur when any Apple computer isturned on. The Crashes (also known as the 'Hawaiian Death Chimes') areproduced by hitting the Programmer's Key (either by hitting the 'Reset' buttonon the computer, or by hitting the 'Command-Reset' keys on the keyboard)during the first stages of boot up. It also occurs during boot up when somelow-level errors occur.
You can click on the sounds below or download a proper quality version here (1.5 Megs). The sounds listed below are lower quality than the files in the archive.
